One of the best exhibits I have recently visited in Atlanta, was Dialog in the Dark, located in Atlantic Station.

The promotion for Dialog in the Dark says “your senses will never be the same”.  They are absolutely right.  In total darkness, you are lead by visually impaired guides through a series of experiences that a sighted person takes for granted.  For example, see what it is like for a blind person to climb a boat ramp or go shopping in the supermarket.  You will be asked to place your belongings in a locker so that you are free of any encumbrances, but keep some money in your pocket.  At the end of the tour you will have the chance to sit at a bar and order a soda or coffee.

When I first sat down and found myself in the dark I was very tense and ready to bolt.  The guide was extremely reassuring and told us to follow her voice. I proceeded with the tour and  I’m so glad I did!

It was a truly unforgettable experience. Without using your sight, all your other senses become heightened and you come away from the experience with a new appreciation for the difficulties a blind person deals with on a daily basis.  You learn some interesting facts. For example, our paper currency has no distinguishing marks on it.  How can you tell whether you are being given a hundred dollar bill or a one dollar bill, if you can’t see it?

I encourage everyone to visit this exhibit.  It will be well worth your time. The tour takes just under an hour.  It is open from 12 noon to 8:00 pm Sunday through Thursday and 12 noon to 10:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.
