So many of you are aware that the Atlanta Public School District has started the process of drafting new attendance maps Buckhead area schools. We wanted to share a letter from Nancy Meister, District 4, Board of Education Member.
Dear Colleagues,
I think it is important for you to know that NO decisions have been made. The options that are on the APS website are options that the outside demographic firm has proposed based purely on enrollment, census data and capacity at our existing and proposed schools. No community, curriculum, financial or policy input was included in these options. This is the starting point.
Over the next month the demographers will be gathering this input and will come back to the administration and public in January to present two new options that are inclusive of all feedback. They will ask for additional feedback on the two new proposals and then make a their recommendation to the administration. In March or April the administration will make a final recommendation for the board to consider.
I cannot stress enough that NO decision has been made and that now is the time for the community to give constructive feedback on the options. It will be very helpful for the demographers to have specific reasons as to why you may like or dislike a particular scenario.
Redistricting is one of the most difficult, emotional and trying tasks. Unfortunately, it is long overdue and tough decisions must be made. The projected growth in District 3 and District 4 over the next 10 years needs to be addressed now. It is my goal that we address the issues quickly and thoughtfully, having minimal impact on our families and as a result end up with great schools for our kids!
Please visit Atlanta Public Schools and click Demographic Study and then on Feedback Form/Comment link. You can view proposed drafts here.
