Mountain Park is a neighborhood filled with history located off Highway 92 in Roswell. Originally composed of summer cottages of Atlanta’s elite, in 1927 the city was incorporated. By 1932, only three families resided in Mountain Park full time and there was no “Prohibition” in Mountain Park, so you could buy more than groceries at “The Stand”. Settled near the Indian Spring, adjacent to the Civic Building, which was believed to have medicinal purposes to the Cherokee Indians, this was the only source of water for the residents until 1960.
Today Mountain Park is home to single-family residences ranging from little cabins to second home type log cabins to lake front homes and even a number of estate homes valued in the millions. The public schools are award-winning including Mountain Park Elementary, Crabapple Middle, and Roswell High School. Also private schools Blessed Trinity and Queen of Angels are minutes from Mountain Park.
Mountain Park is a designated Wildlife Sanctuary with lots of green space, a number of parks and many picnic pavilions. There are two lakes in the city center, Lake Garrett which is a spring fed natural watershed, and Lake Cherful which was constructed in 1951 by flooding Oscar Burrell’s cornfield. Lake Cherful sits half in Fulton County and half in Cherokee, thus the name. Only 1 horsepower engines are allowed on the lakes so you will see many people in kayaks and canoes. Mountain Park is also minutes away from the numerous walking trails in Roswell Parks or the Leta Thompson walking trails.
While there is no commercial business in the city limits of Mountain Park, the proximity to Roswell offers all that you could need or want. Historic Roswell features unique shopping and art galleries. Canton Street Shopping, only 3 miles away, offers antiques and sidewalk cafes. The location is also convenient to healthcare via North Fulton Hospital and the Emory Johns Creek campus.
North Atlanta agent Suzanne Close is a resident of Mountain Park and enjoys “the small town feel, narrow streets, the lakes and the fact that it is an “old growth” forest. It really is Mayberry without Barney!”
