FRIDAY:
Stage: Born into a Hasidic family in post-World War II Brooklyn, Asher Lev’s artistic genius threatens to estrange him from his parents and his observant Jewish community in Theatrical Outfit’s “My Name is Asher Lev.” It continues through Sept. 16 at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s. Take a look at our review of the show.
Festival: More than 400 artists and craftspeople from all over the country converge at the Yellow Daisy Festival, which continues through Sept. 9 at Stone Mountain Park.
Music: Capitol City Opera Company presents Mozart’s “Così fan Tutte” Sept. 7-9 at Oglethorpe University’s Conant Performing Arts Center.
Stage: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s memorable musical “The King And I” continues through Sept. 11 at the Fox Theatre.
Stage: The cherished children’s tale “The Velveteen Rabbit” comes to life on the stage at the New Dawn Theatre Company in Duluth. It continues through Sept. 22.
Stage: Men play the women of Sugarbaker Designs in Process Theatre Co.’s “Designing Women Live 6,” which runs through Sept. 16 at OnStage Atlanta in Decatur.
Stage: The Renaissance Project presents Thornton Wilder’s tale of small town life “Our Town” through Sept. 15.
Music: Vinyl hosts an evening that showcases four up-and-coming local bands. Sons Of Samson, Six To The Wheels and Roshambeaux (at right, Kyle Obermeier, left, and Jarret Chastain) put a modern spin on blues-influenced Southern rock. Rounding out the quartet of bands is Bridge to Grace, which has been working with famed Atlanta hard-rock producer Rick Beato. The show starts at 8 p.m. Sept. 7 at Vinyl.
Stage: In the Polk Street Players’ fantasy farce “Dream Lover,” a “football widow” dreams up a Latin lover. The show continues through Sept. 8 at St. James Episcopal Church in Marietta.
Stage: Actor’s Express presents the musical version of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” The show continues through Oct. 7 at the King Plow Arts Center. Check out our review of the production.
Stage: Revisit a slew of childhood favorites with the Center for Puppetry Arts’ take on “The Tortoise, the Hare and other Aesop’s Fables.” It continues through Sept. 9.
SATURDAY
Festival, food: The Battle of the Burgers is the tastiest place to be this weekend. The competition benefits Embraced, an organization whose mission is to provide mobility equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.) to individuals in need. It begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at John Howell Park in Virginia-Highland.
Festival: The Paws and Planes Festival offers entertainment, food, children’s activities, pet adoptions, helicopter rides and more to benefit the Homeless Pets Foundation and the Marietta Museum of History- Aviation Wing. It begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 8 at the museum.
Festival: You’ll find music, martial arts demonstrations, food, arts and crafts and more at Fair On The Square 2012. It happens 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sept. 8 at Gwinnett Historic Courthouse in Lawrenceville.
Festival: The brews will be plentiful at the Great Atlanta Beer Fest, which takes place 3-8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Turner Field.
Politic, commentary: Television and radio hosts and commentators Bill O’Reilly and Dennis Miller pair up for the Bolder & Fresher Tour 2012, which comes to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre 8 p.m. Sept. 7.
Festival: Russell Gunn, Little Tybee, Atlanta Funk Society, Beverly “Guitar” Watkins and many more musicians will play at the Reynoldstown Wheelbarrow Festival. The festivities run 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sept. 8 at Lang-Carson Park.
Festival, cars: This weekend marks the 10th annual United Way Car and Bike Show. It starts at 8 a.m. Sept. 8 at UPS on Warsaw Road in Roswell.
Festival, food , cars: The Flowery Branch Car Show and Chili Cook Off happens 10 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Depot in Flowery Branch. Rain date is Sept. 15.
Music: New Trinity Baroque celebrates the “Sound the Trumpet” at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church.
Music: Candlelite Concert Series presents Kayla Taylor Jazz at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre in Mableton.
SUNDAY
Music: Peachtree Road United Methodist Church opens its recital season with a performance by organist Michael Shake.
