Atlanta Ranks Number 10 for Cities with Technology

Looking at several factors, such as which cities have the best tech job growth, who has the highest tech salaries, which techies make the most money compared with their non-tech counterparts, the American Electronics Association went looking for answers to determine which U.S. city was king of the geeks.

Atlanta boasts two highly ranked tech schools: Georgia Institute of Technology (GA Tech) and Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) that consistently graduate top notch students who go on to make an impact in the technology and engineering fields.

Georgia Tech is consistently ranked among the best universities in the United States and the world. For over a decade, Georgia Tech has remained in the top ten public universities in the United States. In 2008–2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked Tech as the No. 7 public university, and No. 35 among all universities.

Southern Polytechnic State University was ranked third for the most engineering technology degrees awarded in the United States from 2001 to 2010 in total and third in the number awarded to female graduates in that same time span. The university also ranked second in the nation in total enrollment of students in engineering technology degree programs.

All though we didn’t win the top three we did make the Top 10!

10. Atlanta, Ga.

Home of Southern hospitality and a thriving local music scene, Atlanta scored the number 10 spot with its 126,700 high-tech workers. Techies, on the whole, have higher salaries than non-techies—in Atlanta, that’s a 77 percent difference. Techies in the sprawling metropolis average $82,372, while their non-tech private sector counterparts average $46,481. Think of that difference as a basis for feeling superior, or as a cause for lament since your non-tech friends won’t be able to afford the restaurants your salary enables. You’ll have plenty of time to ponder the difference as you’re stuck in the notoriously horrible Atlanta traffic.
