Buckhead is known for its upscale shopping, exciting nightlife, gorgeous luxury homes and excellent schools. Here are five that have become the favorite schools of parents and students throughout the Atlanta area.
1. The Westminster Schools
Located on West Paces Ferry Road, The Westminster Schools is one of the city’s most notable private education institutions. The Christian co-educational school has been serving the city since 1951 and is available to kids starting from kindergarten all the way up to 12th grade. In 2014, it had an overall class size of 1,856 and 271 faculty members. The school boasts many famous alumni including author Margaret Mitchell, reporter Hannah Storm, talk show host Clark Howard and actor Ed Helms. The school has the 5th-best graduation success rate of any non-boarding school in the United States. If that is not enough to catch your interest, a tour of the school’s beautiful wooded 180-acre campus might. It has even served as the setting for a few movies.
2. Pace Academy
Just east of Westminster, also on West Paces Ferry, is Pace Academy, another one of Atlanta’s fine schools for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Since 1958, Pace has emphasized Judeo-Christian values and strong character to its approximately 1,080 students. The school has a 37-acre campus, most of which was once a private residence. In 2005, it won the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. It has a strong fine arts department and nationally-recognized debate team.
3. The Galloway School
The Galloway School is popular among parents and students in Chastain Park because it sits in the midst of the neighborhood. Founded in 1969, the school welcomes students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and it boasts a faculty of around 89 members. Students tend to have more freedom at The Galloway School and do not receive traditional grades. Instead, they are given individual feedback and progress reports based on how they perform various tasks. All students in 7th grade and beyond are allowed to participate on any sports team. The school also has a strong theater program that has received federal recognition.
4. Atlanta International School
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution calls Atlanta International School “one of the city’s premier private schools.” Located on North Fulton Drive, the school of about 1,150 students and 140 faculty members opened its doors in 1984. It serves kids from age 3 through 12th grade. It is an International Baccalaureate School, and students begin learning foreign languages at the age of 3. Half of the students are American residents, while the other half come from around the world, representing over 93 countries.
5. The Lovett School
Founded in 1926, The Lovett School is one of the city’s oldest educational institutions. Today, its 100-acre campus on West Paces Ferry Road and 280 faculty members welcome around 1,650 students in kindergarten through 12th grade each year. The school offers 20 AP courses and foreign language instruction from kindergarten through graduation, as well as a number of extracurricular activities, including 65 sports teams and lessons for 14 different musical instruments. It also requires mandatory chapel attendance where students learn a Judeo-Christian perspective.
