Things are changing fast in Atlanta. Once known for its long commutes, never-ending sprawl and complete car dependency, Atlanta is now one of the nation’s pioneers in public transportation. The city is heavily investing in MARTA, the metropolitan transit network, as well as urban planning initiatives that aim to build density around central areas and train stations. Those looking for a neighborhood in Atlanta with good public transportation access now have many options to choose from, both close-in and in the suburbs.
Midtown Atlanta
With towering skyscrapers packed with condos, a booming restaurant and nightlife scene and walkable streets lined with historic mansions, Midtown is the neighborhood of Atlanta that feels the most like Manhattan or Paris. Both the red and the gold lines of the MARTA rail run through Midtown, making it extremely easy to hop on board a train and pop into downtown or up to North Atlanta. Midtown is also right next to the massive Beltline project, which will create a ring of parks and public transportation around central Atlanta that will make the core of the city even more transit oriented.
Buckhead
An upscale area in North Atlanta, Buckhead offers both urban condo-style living as well as suburban single family homes that are clustered around the busy commercial corridor of Peachtree Road. Both the red and the orange subway lines run down this street as well as the Buckhead Uptown Connector (the BUC), a free shuttle bus that will take you to MARTA stations as well as major shopping centers and office buildings in the area.
The Old Fourth Ward
This recently revitalized downtown historic district is not only right on the subway line, it is also served by the brand new Atlanta Streetcar. The first streetcar in Atlanta in more than half a century, this electric powered light rail connects many of the city center’s most important attractions and destinations including the CNN Center, the Georgia Aquarium and the Sweet Auburn Market. The Old Fourth Ward itself is home to lofts and condos as well as brand new parks and developments like the Ponce City Market and is also next to the Beltline.
Decatur
With a small town feel and quiet tree shaded suburban streets; it’s hard to believe that Decatur is just six miles east of downtown Atlanta. But jump on board the MARTA train from one of the neighborhood’s three stations and you will see why this is a choice area for downtown working professionals with families. The trip to the Five Points Station in Atlanta’s city center is less than 15 minutes.
