Georgian Mansion

Most cities have their own unique architectural flavor, and the city of Atlanta is no exception. While the Civil War left relatively few original plantation homes intact from that period, modern Atlanta architecture still draws inspiration from many of those styles, and many historic homes from the early 20th century have also been restored to their original glory. Here’s a quick overview of some of Atlanta, Georgia’s most popular luxury home styles.

Georgian Architecture

An architectural style hailing back to the colonial days, Georgian architecture relies heavily on balance, symmetry and adornment, resulting in large, stately homes whose wings spread left and right from a large entrance. Named for King George I-III, this European style eventually informed the designs of its American cousin, the Federal style. Many luxury Atlanta homes built since the Civil War have continued to draw inspiration from this classic architectural style, which are prevalent in the city’s most affluent neighborhoods.

Tudor Architecture

Drawing its influence from Medieval and Renaissance styles, Tudor homes became popular from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, characterized by stone masonry, steep gable roofing and exposed wood frame half-timbering. Many of these historic homes can still be found in Atlanta, especially in historic, upscale neighborhoods.

Colonial Revival

Perhaps the most “American” of the architectural styles found in Atlanta, colonial revival homes dominated the landscape in the early 20th century, implementing a wide range of individual characteristics, but always making a stately presentation. Not only will you find many of these historic homes remaining in Atlanta, but new construction still draws inspiration from this style for its understated elegance.

Victorian

Drawing inspiration from Queen Victoria’s reign in the mid-late 19th century, this architectural style is characterized by elaborate, asymmetrical designs, vertical facades extending two to three stories high, carved wood frames, large porches, bay windows and other adornments such as copulas and turrets. You will find a number of historic Victorian homes within some of Atlanta’s more affluent neighborhoods, as well as some new construction influenced by this style.

Contemporary

A style first popularized in the 1950s and continuing into today, contemporary architecture is characterized by asymmetrical layouts, clean, minimal lines and large windows with plenty of natural light. As Atlanta continues its forward movement as a modern international city, newer luxury homes continue to follow contemporary styles which, while minimal in nature, can take on a wide range of variations.
