Happy Thanksgiving, Atlanta! Today, we celebrate the season of thankfulness with longstanding traditions, amazing foods and time with loved ones. Widely considered one of the first Thanksgivings, an autumn feast was shared between Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians as a symbol of harvest celebration and alliance. Interestingly, lobster, seal and swans were on the Pilgrims’ original menu. Thanksgiving was not proclaimed a national holiday until President Lincoln, in the midst of the Civil War, declared that Thanksgiving Day would commence annually in November to “heal the wounds of the nation”.
Now, American households celebrate Thanksgiving with bountiful meals, 90 percent of which are centered around a turkey entree. The day is also synonymous with volunteering and community aid as well as parades in local towns and larger cities. Read our Thanksgiving Guide for cool recipes to try, convenient hosting hacks and local places to find delicious ingredients and food!
