Holiday Happenings: Veterans Day – Honoring All Who Served

Today, we thank the brave men and women who have served our country selflessly, and it is time to honor all who have served our great nation.

The History
Recognized annually on November 11, Veterans Day aims to celebrate the patriotism, love for America, military service and sacrificial acts attributed to American veterans. The significance of November 11 is that it marked the end of “The Great War”. Although World War I officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles in June 1919, the actual fighting and battles had ceased at 11 a.m. and November 11, 1918. For this reason, President Wilson commemorated the first Armistice Day, a recognition of the soldiers’ heroism and victory of peace.

How Can I Celebrate?
If you would like to take part in a local Veterans Day event, you can visit the Atlanta History Center’s Veterans Day Commemoration program where you can listen to a keynote address given by Rear Admiral Wendi B. Carpenter, United States Navy (Retired) who was a pioneer of women in the United States naval aviation and a recipient of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal. Our colors will be presented by the Atlanta Region Naval Reserve Officer Training Command, and opera baritone Bill Killmeier will sing the National Anthem. The program will take place at Veterans Park at 11 a.m., Monday, November 11.
