This country estate is an over 40-year labor of love. The original farmhouse, which is the heart of the current residence and located on family land, was a home away from home for the owner’s husband and his brother when they were children. They would spend time with friends and stay “on the farm” quite often.

In 1985, a decision to add a garage and den was made. The scope of that project would grow into a detailed, complete two-year rebuild and expansion to the home’s current 5000± square feet. In consultation with architect Jack Wilson from Moultrie, who studied under Frank McCall, the noted architect of Sea Island, a second story was added along with a greatly expanded main floor and garage with a separate bedroom space above. Once, when Mr. Wilson came to the home, he drove by before coming up the driveway. He said, “I’m very relieved. The proportions are right. Because if they were wrong, I couldn’t help you.”

One of the owner’s and her husband’s passions was this home, and much of the renovation was overseen by him. The magnificent chimney at the north end of the home was inspired by many he saw in the area, and he watched as the masons laid every brick. The bricks used in the base of the home and chimney were reclaimed from a historic peanut company building in Blakely. He also was a talented woodworker and carpenter, and much of the home’s woodwork and furniture were designed and built by him.

The expansion and subsequent remodels over the years have added many amazing details to this home. The built-ins and wood panels in the den are amazing. Irreplaceable heart pine floors through much of the home were reclaimed from local houses and farm buildings. The cedar shake roof along the rear of the home was restored and replaced about 15 years ago. Several details from the original farmhouse were preserved, including the corner fireplace in the dining room. The home boasts four fireplaces in all. Also, the kitchen and most bathrooms have been renovated in the last five years. Additionally, the home offers formal dining and living rooms and an office/trophy room, which has an en suite bathroom and could be used as a fifth bedroom. All of the bedrooms in the home are complete with en suite bathrooms.

The kitchen is the owner’s favorite room in the house. The custom, sealed brick pavers for the floor came from Mexico. A fun detail about the pavers is that a coyote print was in one of the bricks, and the workmen were going to discard it, but the owner decided to keep it for the character. The brickwork around the JennAir six-burner cooktop is all custom, and the countertops are made of handmade decorative tiles imported from Portugal, which came by ship only twice a year. It has top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances, including a double oven, a wine cooler and a beverage cooler. The generous proportions of the kitchen and eat-in area are the heart of the home; guests always end up congregating in this great space.

2090 Giles Hightower Road has hosted many memorable events and parties over the years. The huge lawn in the rear of the home has room for hundreds of guests and space for a 5,000± square foot tent. Guests come often to visit and sit on the generous back porch running the length of the home, and the owner loves to sit and watch the hummingbirds and deer that frequent the rear of the property. There is a perfect opportunity to put in a pool on the wide lawn, and a separate outbuilding with beautiful wooden floors and ceilings could be converted into a pool or guest house. Or, you can keep the large lawn and use the fire pit for smores and hotdogs; plus, the putting green keeps your golf game sharp. On clear nights, the stargazing is incredible with a sky full of stars dotting the Milky Way.

The home sits on 10± acres and is surrounded by woods and farmland, offering privacy yet easy accessibility. It would be perfect as a primary residence or a country retreat. Game, bird and deer hunting opportunities are plentiful in this area of Georgia. The parcel could also be subdivided into three generous homesites with the main house in the center.
