Tour Will Showcase Urban Gardening, Landscape Design; Patron Party and Container Gardening Class

ATLANTA, May 6, 2009 –

The High Museum of Art Partners will host the 5th annual Artful Garden Tour on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to benefit the High Museum of Art. This self-guided tour of six private gardens in Atlanta will showcase trends in urban gardening and landscape design.

This year, participants of the tour can take part in special container gardening classes on the same day. Additionally art and garden enthusiast can mix and mingle during the first annual Artful Garden Patron Party, which will be held at The Mansion on Peachtree on Thursday, May 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Atlantans wishing to green their thumbs can tour some of the cities most vibrant gardens on the Artful Garden Tour,” said Art Partners Event Chair, Kimberly Merritt. “No matter what size someone’s garden is or their level or expertise, Artful Garden Tour participants will definitely learn expert gardening techniques and pick up design ideas they can later use in their own homes.”

The featured gardens range from formal to intimate cottage-style gardens, to lawn-free and low-water gardens to Japanese-influenced designs. Highlights include a contemporary garden at a unique Robert Green-designed home in the Briarlake area and a stunning courtyard garden at the elegant new high-rise community The Mansion on Peachtree, A Rosewood Hotel & Residence. The six private gardens on the tour are only open to the public for one day and all are conveniently located in northeast Atlanta.

Other features of the tour include:

  • New this year: Container garden seminar on Saturday, May 16 at 9 a.m. and Container garden make-and-take class on Saturday, May 16 at 3 p.m., both offered at Habersham Gardens
  • Local artists exhibiting their clay, glass, metal creations and paintings in the gardens
  • Plein-air painters at work in several of the gardens

Tickets to the Artful Garden Tour are $20 per person before May 14, $25 after that date and can be purchased online at www.high.org/gardentour , by calling 404-733-4521, or at any of the gardens on the day of the tour. All of the proceeds from the tour benefit the High Museum of Art. Ticket holders can also choose to attend the patron party, an educational seminar on container gardening or a container gardening “make and take” when purchasing their tickets.
