Weekend Best Bets: March 30-April 1,2012

Don’t miss BaconFest, the swine-tastic annual celebration of all things piggy that also raises money for the funny folks at Dad’s Garage Theatre. The fun starts at 1 p.m. March 31 at the theater company’s Inman Park home.

FRIDAY

Stage: The musical stage version of the classic Mel Brooks film comedy “Young Frankenstein”is at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre through April 1.

Families, performing arts: Celebrate the animated films of Disney with “Disney On Ice Presents Treasure Trove,” which includes a visit to the world of princesses from Snow White and Cinderella to Mulan and Tiana. It continues at the Gwinnett Arena through April 1.

Music: The Spelman College Jazz Ensemble presents its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. March 30 at the school’s Sisters Chapel.

Stage: Dunwoody United Methodist Church presents the stage version of the beloved musical“The Sound of Music.” It runs through April 1.

Stage: “Black Voices: Unbreakable Faith” is a play that focuses on the challenges faced by contemporary African Americans through a collection of vignettes accompanied by music and dance. It runs March 30 through April 2 at  Clark Atlanta University’s Davage Auditorium.

Dance: Roswell Dance Theatre’s pre-professional company presents the classic fairy tale“Sleeping Beauty” on March 30 and 31 at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center.

Dance: D’AIR Aerial Dance Theatre Company performs “Shadows Of Doubt” March 30-April 1 at the D’AIR Project.

Stage: “Motherhood the Musical” takes a tuneful and loving look at the blessings and perils of being a mom. It’s at the 14th Street Playhouse through May 20.

Stage: A group of British women fall under the spell of Italy in “Enchanted April.” The Lionheart Theatre Company production opens March 23 at the Norcross Cultural Arts and Community Center and continues through April 8.

Stage: “Clyde ’n Bonnie: A Folktale” is Aurora Theatre’s musical take on the story of the infamous romancing robbers. It runs through April 8 at the Lawrenceville venue.

Stage: Stage Door Players present the romantic comedy “Same Time, Next Year” at North DeKalb Cultural Arts Center in Dunwoody through April 8.

Fair, families: Hit the midway and take a ride on some classic attractions at the Atlanta Fair, from the Ferris wheel and the merry- go-round to more thrill-inducing rides. And don’t miss the deep- fried decadence of the food. It continues in the Turner Field Gray Parking lot through April 8.

Stage: The Atlanta Shakespeare Company continues its chronological run through the Bard’s comedies with “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” The show continues through April 1 at the New American Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta.

Flowers: Spring is in the air and it’s popping out of the ground at the Atlanta Botanical Garden during “Atlanta Blooms.” Catch the profusion of hyacinths, crocuses, tulips and daffodils at this second annual floral tribute to the season of rebirth. Check the Garden’s website to see what’s in bloom. The event continues through April 29.

Festival, arts: The Atlanta Francophonie Festival celebrates French language and culture at events at various venues around town, including the High Museum of Art and the Rialto Center for the Arts. The fest continues through March 31. Many events are free; tickets required for others. Check the fest’s website for details.

SATURDAY

Festival, food: The Mother Clucker Fried Chicken Festival finds 11 of Atlanta’s favorite chefs firing up the fryers to cook up some delectable birds from 2- 6 p.m. March 31 at Rosebud and the Family Dog.

Festival, beer: Sample more than 120 brews at the Suwanee American Craft Beer Festbeginning at noon March 31 at Suwanee Town Center Park.

Festival, holiday: The hunt begins a week early at the Decatur Easter Egg Hunt and First Baptist Church of Decatur Spring Fling. The fun begins at 10 a.m. March 31.

Kids: “Be A Future Vet” offers hands-on opportunities for children to explore the world of veterinary medicine at Noon March 31 at Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta.

Festival, activism: Kennesaw State University Peace Project will try to break the record for the world’s largest human peace sign. At noon March 31 on the Campus Green.

Festival, food: Park Tavern host the ninth annual Oyster and Crawfish Festival, with music from Cowboy Mouth and others. The event begins at 2 p.m. March 31.

Festival, holiday: The beautiful surroundings at Palmetto’s Serenbe community are the perfect spot for a Spring Fling and Easter Egg Hunt. It happens at 3 p.m. March 31.

Stage: “Guys and Dolls Jr.” is presented by Jerry’s Habima Theatre, a theatrical company featuring actors with developmental disabilities, directed and produced by professionals. Performances continue through April 1 at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta’s Morris & Rae Frank Theatre in Dunwoody.

Music, festival: The Stone Mountain Village Blue Grassroots Music & Arts Festival celebrates its third year. The fest happens 10 a.m.-7 p.m. March 31 in Stone Mountain Village.

Music: Atlanta Freedom Bands present “March Madness and April Fools” at 8 p.m. March 31 at Druid Hills United Methodist Church.

SUNDAY

Families, holiday: Families with pre-school aged children and their older siblings are invited to the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta for a morning of Passover songs, crafts, stories and fun at “Let My People Play: Passover Family Fun Day at the J.” It starts at 10 a.m. April 1.

Festival: Take a journey to the Caribbean without leaving Atlanta at Salsa Fest, a tribute to the music, food and culture of the tropical region. The fun begins at noon April 1 at Atlantic Station.

Music: The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet performs at Kennesaw State University’s Bailey Performance Center at 3 p.m. April 1.

Music: Hip indie orchestra Pink Martini makes the perfect music for an evening of cocktails. The ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. April 1 at Atlanta Symphony Hall.
