Few people consider Atlanta to be a college town, but the truth is that it is home to dozens of higher education institutions. Here is a brief look at some of Atlanta’s most popular colleges and universities:
Georgia Tech
The Georgia Institute of Technology, or simply, Georgia Tech, is located on North Avenue in Midtown on over 400 acres. It was founded in 1885 as part of the rebuilding of Atlanta after the Civil War, and today, it is home to over 21,000 students. It is often ranked one of the top ten public universities in the country by various publications.
Georgia State University
Located in the heart of Downtown is Georgia State University, one of the state’s largest public research universities. It is home to over 32,000 students and offers over 250 degrees and programs. The school’s history dates back to 1913 when it began as a night school for commerce students.
Emory University
Though it technically sits just outside the city in unincorporated DeKalb County’s Druid Hills neighborhood, Atlanta still claims Emory University as one of its own. The private research university was founded in 1836 and currently has about 14,500 students. US News and World Report ranks it as the 21st-best university in the nation for 2015. Its many notable alumni include former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, President Jimmy Carter, former Coca Cola president Robert Woodruff, and clothing designer Kenneth Cole.
Morehouse College
Morehouse is an all-male, private liberal arts college located on Westview Drive in Downtown Atlanta. It dates back to 1867 and has produced several famous alumni, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Spike Lee, and Herman Cain. US News and World Report rated it the second-best historically black college in the nation in 2014.
