5 Things You Didn’t Know About Springtime in Atlanta

Atlanta is a wonderful place to live or visit, and that is never more evident than it is during the springtime. Temperatures rise but not too far, and annual traditions start all over again. According to National Geographic, “Atlanta is surprisingly lush with trees — magnolias, dogwoods, Southern pines and magnificent oaks.” In springtime, many of those trees and all of the other beautiful plants in the city are in full bloom. What else makes the city great during spring? Here are five things you may not know.

  1. The Dogwood Festival has been a city staple for nearly 80 years.

When all of the trees in Atlanta Springtime in Atlantabegin to bloom, none of them are quite as pretty as the native dogwoods. To celebrate their beauty, the city hosts an annual event known as the Dogwood Festival, and 2015 will be its 79th anniversary. It takes place each April in Piedmont Park, and people come from all over the country to shop for art, listen to music, play games, eat and enjoy other family-friendly activities.

  1. Locals skip work and school for the Braves home opener.

2015 is the 50th anniversary of the Braves making Atlanta their home, and the team will play its first home games during a weekend series with the Mets in early April. If the first game was not on a Friday night, however, you can bet thousands of Atlanta-area residents would call in sick just to be there to see the first pitch, order a cold drink and take in the sights and sounds of Turner Field.

  1. The average high in April is around 73 degrees.

Many people love Atlanta weather because it does not get too cold during the winter, but those summers can get pretty hot. Springtime in Atlanta , on the other hand, is absolutely perfect. Highs in March hover around the low 60s; in April, the average high is 73 degrees; and in May, you may even see some low 80s. In other words, it is the perfect time to play a round of golf or visit a favorite Atlanta park or attraction.

  1. You can get to the lake in less than an hour.

When those temperatures do begin to rise, you don’t need to head to the coast to spend a day of fun in the sun. Just drive north to Lake Lanier where you can swim, sunbathe on a sandy beach, boat and do practically anything else you can do in the Atlantic or the Gulf.

  1. You can watch over 300,000 flowers come alive in one place.

By just driving around Atlanta you are sure to see some gorgeous dogwoods and azaleas in full bloom, but there aren’t too many places where you can see over 300,000 blooms in one place. The Atlanta Botanical Garden’s springtime celebration, “Atlanta Blooms,” is the exception. In 2015, it promises 300,000 tulips, daffodils and more.
