#TravelTuesday: A National Treasure in McLean, Virginia

Happy Travel Tuesday! This week we’re heading north, just outside our nation’s capital to McLean, Virginia to take a look at the finest estate residence ever offered in the Washington, D.C. region.

Situated at 411 Chain Bridge Road, this timeless piece of modern architecture, known simply as “The Falls,” is privately positioned on a premier site overlooking the Potomac River. The 3.2+/- acre estate affords a rare privacy, as guests enter the property through a private security gate and gate house – which also includes separate staff quarters. Beyond the gates, a private drive leads to a secure arrival court, and provides access to an underground parking garage which accommodates 30 cars.

Bronze entry doors welcome guests to a gracious rotunda and gallery leading to the dramatic, two-story living room overlooking the river. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with natural light, and the view will make you feel as if you’re in the midst of nature.

The bespoke interiors were thoughtfully designed by renowned designer Thomas Pheasant, including the majority of the furnishings which were custom-made for the residence. The main residence offers six bedroom suites, all with en suite baths. The master suite is positioned within a private wing of the main residence and includes a private study, a spa style bath with steam, dry sauna and jacuzzi and an expansive dressing room. This wing also includes a private service kitchen, exercise room, massage room and a second bathroom.

The main residence captures every imaginable luxury for world-class entertaining. A custom, mahogany library captures sweeping river views and includes an impressive wet bar. Nearby, a private lounge adjoins the expansive wine cellar. Just beyond the lounge, a 3-D media room incorporates a state-of-the-art media system. The residence offers multiple venues throughout suitable for entertaining small groups or large-scale receptions.

The outdoor terrace affords perhaps the finest view of the Potomac River in the region. A glittering infinity pool and spa yield to the limitless views of the river and beyond. On the southern side of the estate, a full-size tennis court and pavilion is positioned adjacent to the private gardens. A pathway through the gardens leads to the exceptional guest quarters.

The guest quarters, perhaps better known as The Marden House, is a treasure in its own right. The building was designed and constructed by the world-renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959 and is one of only a handful of homes in Virginia that he designed.

Frank Lloyd Wright was noted for his frequent use of glass, and the way he used the material to blend the boundary between indoor and outdoor worlds. In typical Wright fashion, The Marden House features entire walls of glass that capture sweeping views of the river. As a separate guest quarters or as a place to entertain, The Marden House is a priceless addition to this most unique estate.
